T Drives the Truck

T drives his aunt and uncle's vintage truck on December 27, 2011 ... sound effects included.

More Tiny Dictionary

Since I posted T's list of words we've tried to keep track of the ones I missed. I know there are others, but I just don't remember them at the moment.

"Ball"
This was one of his earliest words, but I forgot until I heard him say it the other day. "Ball" has been preempted by "car."

"Hot"
I love this one. It's heavily aspirated at the beginning and ends very abruptly with and accent... hhhhUH. The 'h' sound kind of crescendos up to the accent.

"Bubble"
This was actually on the original list, but we had a new bubble moment yesterday. T got bored of charming the ladies at the knit shop and went exploring. He found some bottles of detergent for hand knits and got all excited "bubbuh, bubbuh, bubbuh."

"Apple"
Although T recognizes actual apples by name, he seems to have a broader definition of the word. We walked into Whole Foods on Saturday and he immediately pointed to the orange display and said "apple." He picked his own "apple" and cradled it in his arms for most of the shopping trip. I kept telling him it was an orange, but he maintained that it was an apple. He started out saying 'bapple' but is more consistent with his apple pronunciation these days.

"Spoon"
It sounds like something between "boo" and "poo" but it's obviously a spoon he's talking about.

"Banana"
He's very articulate with his "nana" sound, but chooses to ingore the 'ba' part. It's ok, he gets plenty of 'bah' in his bubbles.

Moring Fart n' Strech yeilds chuckles

T has a real sense of humor. He was making his morning pilgrimage toward the base board of our bed when I blocked him with my feet to keep him from falling over the edge. He rolled onto his back and didn't make an effort to get up. It was dark, but I could see him laying there looking up at me stretching his little arms over his head (or at least a close to over his head as short 14.5-month-old arms go) when he farted into the silence. A split second later he laughed, an impish sneaky little chuckle, like he'd shared a very clever joke. I burst out laughing and T laughed along with me. He's funny and he knows it.

The Tiny Dictionary

I really need to start documenting T's words so far (Long post Alert!)...

"Car"
This is his favorite word EVER. "Cah Cah Cah ... " he says, pointing at the garage door. What he's after is the Mustang. Although the toy cars and the Kettcar get the pointy finger and exclamations of "Cah," THE CAR is the Mustang. I keep trying to tell him that the Honda is also a car and I think he understands, but the Mustang is a novelty. He loves to sit in the driver seat and turn the steering wheel while making "vroom vroom" and "uht uht" (a "beep beep" that sounds more like a fake burp) sounds. He knows were the horn is and regularly tries to push it, but it's too stiff for him so we have to help out. He never tires of playing in the car. Last night I was trying to help him understand "black car" and "green car" and he was trying to say both simple phrases. I think he may have even talked about the "green car" over dinner.

"More"
We hear "Moh" A LOT, lol. He also does the sign as he says it which is adorable. He uses this to let us know when he wants more food. If we give him more of the wrong thing he points to let us know what he really wants. Sometimes he wants something he already has. He recognizes that the whole pasta noodles look different from the ones on his tray and he wants the ones that look like Mommy and Daddy's! He also says "Moh" when he wants something to eat. I love that he lets us know when he wants a snack.

"Uh Oh"
This has been a regular for at least two months, probably more. He generally says this when he drops something, by accident or on purpose.

"Done"
He's abbreviated "Ah Duh" to just "Duh" and uses this to let us know he's done with dinner and occasionally when he's done with other things as well. He says the word and signs by waving his hands in the air.

"Bye Bye"
This is accompanied by a very smooth little wrist originated wave that I sometimes refer to as the "beauty pageant wave." He actually says "Gye Gye," which is a little funny since he's really proficient at making a "B" sound. He loves to wave bye to people, but my favorite context is in the bathroom. He is very good at bidding farewell to the toilet contents as we flush.

"Hi"
This is relatively new and sounds exactly like "Hi." He enjoys saying "Hi" to random people.

"Thank you"
He really gets this. It's so cute to hear him say "Ki Ku" when someone gives him something. We first heard this while we were visiting The Scoot's parents at Christmas time. This morning he thanked a tiny class mate who handed him a Lego block shortly after we arrived at school.

"Milk"
Ok, so "Nuh" doesn't sound anything like milk to me, but this is what he says as he frantically signs for milk - two little fists opening and closing like milking a cow. If I don't respond to the plea for "Nuh, Nuh, Nuh ..." instantaneously, he tries to lift up my shirt himself. Yeah, I still think this is cute. Oh, and if the milk doesn't flow as fast as he'd like he stops, looks at me, and signs and says "Nuh, Nuh, Nuh ..." again. I've started having to tell him there's a limited supply and sometimes he has to be patient, lol. He absolutely knows what and where the "other side" is too.

"Bubbles"
One day when we picked him up at school, T pointed The Scoot over to the bubble maker and pronounced "Bubah" (multiple times of course). It was a fabulously articulate pronunciation for a 14-month-old. He was very excited about the bubbles and wanted us to help him make them.

"Rasin"
He LOVES raisins. This is one of his new favorite snacks and he can go through almost and entire box in one sitting.

"Kitty"
T loves to follow the cats around and to pet them. He also enjoys helping to feed them. He scoops the food and puts it in each bowl with a little help and wants to keep going even after all three cat bowls are filled. He frequently points at one of the cats and says "Ki-y"

"Da and Ma"
He says "Da" a lot more than "Ma" these days. I think my name is "Nah" (Milk). Gone are the days of random "Dadada" and "Mamama" babbling.

Other words he uses (or has used):
"Grapefruit" (he ate it too)
"Cracker"
"Book" (With a silent 'K')
"Yeah" (An examination of pleasure)
"Duck" (He has/had some duck bath toys)
"Blue" (haven't heard this in a long time, but he said it multiple times)
"Butterfly" (I haven't heard myself, but he says it at school)

T also likes to rattle off "sentences" complete with tonal inflection and occasional emphatic statements, but I have yet to interpret any of these longer utterances.

T's first ER Visit

I posted this on the family web site on December 19, 2011. The Actual ER trip was December 16th...

Luckily we knew it wasn't critical, but we decided it really couldn't wait until morning. I got a call from daycare around 4:45pm saying T had tripped into a shelf and cut his lip badly and that we should come as soon as was convenient. I had been planning to leave anyway, so I packed up, picked Scott up at the other campus, and headed to daycare to get T.

He was playing (only slightly mournfully), sucking a pacifier, and was wearing a fresh (non-bloody) outfit. There was a large flap of skin on the lower part of his upper lip that was being held in place by the pacifier. I think his lower teeth went into his upper lip at a weird angle and tore down so the flap was attached at the bottom of his upper lip. We took him him home and went about our normal routine. He ate a little, but cried when tomato sauce on his pasta burned the wound. He took a bath, nursed and went to bed without too much trouble. At 8:30pm he woke up crying and kept rubbing his lip so the injury wouldn't stay closed :(

I called the after hours doc and asked for advice. She double-checked with the ER and let us know that they would do stitches if it was bad enough so we decided to head down. The wound was pretty nasty looking, but it wasn't deep, just long. I figured they would probably just cut the flap off and I was right. The doc said it was a good idea to come in because the lip would heal quicker and cleaner without the flap and T would be much more comfortable. He kept trying to spit the skin flap out out by blowing raspberries which only made the skin flap around. T was awake (and happy, thanks to pacifier and ibuprofen) the whole time we were at the ER. He conked out around midnight, about halfway through the car ride home and slept well until the ibuprofen wore off a few hours later. We ended up giving him ibuprofen every 6-8 hours for almost 2 days.

I was amazed by how much better his lip looked the next morning. They say he's really good about letting them ice his owies at daycare, so the swelling was really minimal and all the blood and angry red were gone after the trimming. It was a long night, but I'm glad we went.

Technobabe says "Uh Oh"

T likes all things technology: remotes, video cameras, cell phones, iPads, you name it! If you watch closely he turns into a robot for just a moment in the middle of the clip. If you make it all the way to the end he'll reward you with a winning smile as he tries to confiscate the iPad from Daddy.

T has been saying "Uh Oh" for ages. I swear I blogged about it, but I can't seem to find the post to verify approximately when it started. Anyhow, here's the proof! It's one of his favorite phrases. He says it when he accidentally drops something and he says it when he purposely drops something. I also love the way he grunts like a weight lifter when he picks up something heavy or awkward.

A Daily Dose of Crazy!

This video was taken on November 4, 2011 ... just two days before T's first birthday. What has this kid been eating?

And just in case one dose of crazy wasn't enough ... here's some more.
